June is recognized as Men’s Mental Health Month, a time to raise awareness about the unique mental health challenges men face and to encourage open conversations about emotional well-being.
As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I’ve seen firsthand how societal expectations often pressure men to be “strong,” independent, and emotionally reserved. While resilience is valuable, suppressing stress, anxiety, depression, or emotional pain can lead to worsening mental health outcomes and delayed treatment.
The reality is that mental health conditions do not discriminate. Men experience depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, and burnout just as frequently as anyone else. Unfortunately, many men are less likely to seek support, often waiting until symptoms significantly impact their relationships, work, or physical health.
Seeking help is not a sign of weakness—it is an act of strength and self-awareness. Whether through therapy, medication management, trusted relationships, or lifestyle changes, support is available, and recovery is possible.
This month, I encourage all men to check in with themselves and with the men they care about. A simple conversation can make a profound difference.
Your mental health matters. You do not have to carry the weight alone.
